SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Going in to the ITA Southwest Regional, it was apparent that the Pepperdine women's tennis team was going to be one of the most talented squads in the field. The Waves were the region's only top-15 team in the ITA year-end rankings, they brought three nationally ranked singles players to the tournament and all four Pepperdine players earned first-round byes in the singles draw.
On Thursday the Waves proved it, as all four singles players faced little resistance in the second round of singles play.
Kicking off their first day of the tournament,
Janice Tjen and
Anna Campana won in straight sets, plus
Nikki Redelijk and
Savannah Broadus posted 6-0, 6-0 wins. As a team, the Waves only dropped seven games combined.
Making her fall season debut, #11 Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) made quick work of Cal State Fullerton senior Natalie Duffy in her 6-2, 6-1 win. This sets her up with a match against cross-town foe Sloane Morra of USC in the next round.
In a matchup between two PCH Cup rivals, Pepperdine graduate senior
Anna Campana got the best of Loyola Marymount's Isabella Tcherkes-Zade in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Campana's next challenger will be Arizona State freshman Emilija Tverijonaite — the No. 5 player in the ITA newcomer/freshman rankings — tomorrow.
Meanwhile, both Broadus and Redelijk cruised in their only matches of the day with 6-0, 6-0 sweeps. Broadus beat Hawai'i-via-Long Beach State freshman Sheena Masuda, while Redelijk made quick work of UC San Diego junior Kelly Leung.
Tomorrow, the nation's No. 1 doubles team of Broadus and Tjen will make their fall season debut at USD against either Cal State Northridge's Talia Harper and Emma Moratalla Sanz, or Arizona's team of Lauren Friedman and Tanvi Narendran. Their match starts at 10 a.m.
Over at San Diego State, Campana and Redelijk will take on UC Irvine's Cydney Yamamoto and Nour Khayat at 9:30 a.m.
