MALIBU, Calif. — Pepperdine men's tennis players George Davis and Photos Photiades both picked up wins on the first day of the San Diego Veterans' Tennis Classic, hosted by the University of San Diego at the Hogan Tennis Center on Friday.
Playing against the United States Naval Academy team, Davis (London, England) and Photiades (Dali, Cyprus) won both of their singles matches and emerged victorious in a 6-4 doubles win. Friday was the first time Davis and Photiades have been doubles partners.
In singles, Photiades earned his first collegiate singles win with a three-set win over Navy sophomore Nathan Nguyen. After gutting out a 7-6 first-set win, Photiades fell 3-6 in the second set before putting Nguyen in the rear-view mirror with a 6-1 third-set win.
Davis also had to grind out a three-setter in singles play. The graduate senior pulled off a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Navy senior Sasha Panyan for his third singles victory of the fall season.
Tomorrow, both Waves will take on players from Boise State, starting with doubles at 9 a.m. PT. Matches will be livestreamed via TrackTennis; a link can be found on the men's tennis schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
