TULSA, Okla. — Pepperdine men's tennis sophomore Linus Carlsson Halldin completed his run in the ITA All-American Tournament Pre-Qualifying Singles bracket with wins over Luke Baylis of Michigan State and Trinity Grear of Rice on Sunday.
With the wins, Carlsson Halldin (Stockholm, Sweden) earned a berth in the qualifying singles bracket, which starts Monday morning. His first match will be against 6-seed Alex Petrov of Illinois at 7:30 a.m. PT on Monday.
Carlsson Halldin's day began with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Luke Baylis of Michigan State. Playing in a three-hour marathon against Rice's Trinity Grear later that afternoon, Carlsson Halldin overcame dropping the first set by winning the second one, then didn't back down when facing several match points in the decisive third set to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7).
Elsewhere in the qualifying singles bracket, freshman Edward Winter (Adelaide, Australia) will play against North Carolina graduate senior Karl Poling in the first round tomorrow at 8 a.m. PT. Poling, an Idahoan, played primarily on the fourth line for North Carolina last year, and was ranked #93 in the ITA's Preseason Singles rankings earlier this summer.
Additionally, Carlsson Halldin and Winter begin their stint in the men's open doubles bracket tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. PT. Carlsson Halldin and Winter will play against Tiago Torres and Alan Magadan of UTSA — familiar foes for the Waves. This past May, Pepperdine All-Americans Daniel De Jonge and Tim Zeitvogel faced off against Torres and Magadan in the first round of the NCAA Men's Team Tournament; the Waves duo prevailed to help Pepperdine win 4-1 against the Roadrunners. This year, Torres and Magadan are ranked #44 in the ITA polls.
