CARY, N.C. — Pepperdine women's tennis graduate senior Anna Campana earned a spot in the qualifying singles bracket of the ITA All-American Championships with two wins on Sunday.
Campana (Hillsborough, Calif.) took down players from Arizona and Oklahoma State in order to complete her pre-qualifying singles run on Sunday. With the wins, she earned a spot in the qualifying singles draw, which begins tomorrow with a match against Auburn graduate senior Adeline Flach at 9 a.m. PT/noon local time.
On Sunday morning, Campana dispatched Arizona sophomore Reece Carter in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-4 win. The next round would be tougher for Campana, as the graduate senior outlasted Oklahoma State's Kristina Novak — who was ranked #90 in the ITA preseason singles rankings — in three sets. The match, which is the longest one Campana has played in the tournament so far, required Campana to stage a comeback after falling 6-7 (7-5) in the first set. However, Campana prevailed by winning the next two 6-3, 6-4 for arguably her best singles win of the young fall season.
Elsewhere in singles action, Pepperdine senior Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) beat Mariya Polishchuk of Texas Tech in the consolation singles bracket 7-5, 6-2. She will face Illinois junior Megan Heuser in the next consolation match tomorrow at a time that has yet to be determined.
Scores from Campana and Redelijk's consolation doubles match against Notre Dame's Maria Olivia Castedo and Page Freeman were not available at the time of this publication.
