PALO ALTO, California – The #20 Pepperdine men's tennis program won the doubles point and had an early lead in singles on Sunday afternoon, but fell 4-2 to Texas A&M at the Taube Family Tennis Center in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Doubles were close throughout, as neither team was able to gain separation. Texas A&M (1-1) earned the first victory on three, but Pepperdine (0-2) evened the score soon after as #34
Daniel De Jonge (Vlissingen, Netherlands) and
Tim Zeitvogel (Baden-Baden, Germany) were 6-3 winners in the top-35 matchup on the main court over #33 Hilderbrand and Schachter.
Maxi Homberg (Freising, Germany) and
Eero Vasa (Turku, Finland) won 6-4 on court two to secure the doubles point and propel the Waves to an early 1-0 lead.
Homberg doubled the lead for the Waves in singles, cruising to a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the first singles match to finish. Despite Pepperdine winning four first sets, the Aggies kept the pressure on and clawed their way back into it with wins on courts three and six to tie the match at two apiece and turn it into a best-of-three.
A&M took the third set on court one, putting Pepperdine in a 3-2 hole with the Waves needing a third set rally on court two combined with a second and third set win on court five. The Aggies on court five would be the first to finish and give A&M the match win.
