PLAY-BY-PLAY
Pepperdine opened up the game on a Moore three followed by a Mallette layup to counter the Pilots' hot shooting, but turnovers proved costly as the Portland defense sunk inside to stop Porter and Basham. Despite the shooting woes, the Waves won the rebound battle in the first half going 14-11. Portland went on a 15-0 run late in the period to stretch the UP lead to 27 at its peak, but Pepperdine answered with two runs of its own, capitalized by a Lewis and-one. Heading into the locker rooms, the Pilots led 50-34.
The Waves came back out with a spark, scoring five early points off of Portland turnovers. Pepperdine slowed the Pilots' scoring runs for the first 10 minutes of the second period, shrinking the margin to nine, but the Pilots stretched their lead back to 18 with five minutes to play. The Waves played with urgency, getting back within nine of Portland but free throws sealed the loss for Pepperdine..
