#14 Pepperdine and California Tie 1-1

BERKELEY, Calif. – Carlee Giammona's late 76th-minute goal equalized the match as the #14 Pepperdine women's soccer team tied California 1-1 on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Waves are unbeaten after six games for the first time since 2011.

The Waves (4-0-2) dominated the attack, outshooting Cal (2-1-2) 21-4. The Golden Bears scored in the first half despite a 4-2 shot advantage for the Waves. Pepperdine came out firing in the second half, putting up 17 more shots. Ellie Sommers also had a season-high three saves. Pepperdine has outshot its opponents this season 121-26.

GOALS

California 24': Cal's Courtney Boone took possession of the ball at midfield just outside the circle in the defensive zone. Boone dashed through the middle of the field to 30 yards out and sent a right-footed rocket off the bottom of the crossbar into the net.

Pepperdine 76': The Waves earned a throw-in on the left side in the attacking zone after the Golden Bears kicked it out of play. Junior defender Victoria Romero (Claremont, Calif./The Webb Schools) threw the ball into freshman forward Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS). Wynalda sent a right-footed pass through two Cal defenders to sophomore forward Tabitha LaParl (Lakewood, Calif./Los Alamitos HS). LaParl made a couple moves closer into the box and sent a cross to senior midfielder Carlee Giammona (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS/Alabama), who kicked the ball out of the air with her right foot and sent a one-hopper ball into the net. This was Giammona's fourth goal of the season, which is tied for the team-high.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Tim Ward said: "I thought we played a really great soccer game today against a very good opponent. It felt very much like a chess match, and for the people watching I think they saw two potential postseason types of teams battling it out. Not sure if you could feel it, but it was hot out there today and its amazing how we got stronger as the game went on!

"Our staff is so proud of our spirit to fight back. We went from being a goal down, to equalizing, to creating a number of chances in the last fifteen that we felt easily could have won us the game. We're looking forward to recharging our batteries and working on some things this week."
