#14 Waves Collect Shutout Victory Over Gauchos

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The #14 Pepperdine women's soccer team collected its fourth shutout of the season after blanking UC Santa Barbara 3-0 on Thursday night at Harder Stadium. The Waves are unbeaten through five games for the first time since 2011.

The Waves (4-0-1) dominated the first half after having taken all seven shots while scoring once and keeping the Gauchos (0-4-1) off the shot chart. UCSB put some pressure on the Waves in the second half, but the Waves added two more goals in the final 20 minutes. Pepperdine has now outshot its opponents 100-19 through just five games. Junior goalkeeper Ellie Sommers (Westminster, Colo./Legacy HS) collected her second solo shutout of the season.

GOALS

Pepperdine 42': Freshman forward Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) crashed down the right side of the field. As Wynalda ran down the side of the box, she sent a right-footed hook pass to sophomore forward Tabitha LaParal (Lakewood, Calif./Los Alamitos HS). LaParl ran into the middle of the box and off the one-hop pass, LaParl sent a right-footed rocket that tipped off the UCSB keeper's glove into the back of the net. This was LaParl's second goal of the season.

Pepperdine 71': The Gauchos' keeper tried to get the ball out of the box, but junior forward Tori Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) read the ball perfectly and beat the UCSB defender to the pass. Waldeck sent a left-footed tap into the back of the net. This was Waldeck's second goal of the season.

Pepperdine 88': Redshirt senior forward Leyla McFarland (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS) darted down the right side of the field then did a side-to-side move in front of the Gauchos' defender, making her way to the middle. From about 18 yards out, McFarland sent a left-footed rocket past the keeper. This was McFarland's team-high fourth goal of the season.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Tim Ward said: "Really gritty and professional performance against a well-coached and organized UCSB team. It took some amazing goals to break through, but super proud of our ladies for sticking to the process and defending very well again. Considering we have five games in a row on the road, this was a great start!"
