8/18/2022 6:06:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Waves' eight goals is the team's third-most goals ever scored in a game.
Pepperdine (1-0) scored four goals in the first 45 minutes and four goals in the second half and kept CSUN (0-1) off the board and held the Matadors to only two shots, one in each half. The Waves have opened up the season with a shutout for the second year in a row.
Giammona had two assists to go with her two goals, while Trinity Watson scored on a penalty kick and tied a Pepperdine record with three assists in a game.
GOALS
Pepperdine 16': Redshirt senior defender Trinity Watson (Ocean Beach, Calif./Point Loma HS) sent a rocket pass from the defensive zone to senior midfielder Carlee Giammona (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS/Alabama). Giammona went one-on-one with the CSUN keeper and beat her on the left side of the box to send a left-footed tap into the open net.
Pepperdine 31': Giammona sent a right-footed pass to junior defender Victoria Romero (Claremont, Calif./The Webb Schools) on the left side of the box. Romero sent a cross to freshman forward Melina Livadas (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) who got in front of a CSUN defender and sent a left-footed tap into the back of the net. This was Livadas' first collegiate goal.
Pepperdine 34': Near the far left corner of the field, Giammona sent a beautiful cross to Livadas in front of the CSUN keeper. Livadas jumped up and headed the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the game.
Pepperdine 37': Senior forward Alex Hobbs (Sammaish, Wash./The Overlake School) came crashing in on the right side of the box and was fouled. The Waves were awarded a penalty kick that Watson took and beat the keeper. This was Watson's seventh career penalty kick, which ties the school record.
Pepperdine 57': Sophomore forward Kelsey Adams (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) sent a right-footed tap to senior midfielder Shelby Little (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Hillcrest Christian HS). Little served up a great right-footed cross to redshirt senior forward Leyla McFarland (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS), who was positioned perfectly for a leaping header past the CSUN goalkeeper.
Pepperdine 59': Watson took a corner kick from the left side of the field. Adams sent a header from the far post back in front of the left post to McFarland, who was in front of the keeper between two defenders. McFarland jumped and sent her second header in less than two minutes into the back of the net.
Pepperdine 79': On another Waves' corner kick from Watson, she sent a perfectly executed set piece to Giammona, who sent a left-footed tap out of the air into the back of the net. This was Giammona's second goal of the game.
Pepperdine 83': Freshman midfielder/forward Tatum Wynalda (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) came crashing down the right side of the field. Wynalda cut back in front of a CSUN defender to about 15 yards out. Wynalda sent a rocket off the left post that went into the net, for her first collegiate goal.
