MALIBU, California – Four Pepperdine student-athletes have earned 2021-22 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar status, which was recently released by the publication Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
 
Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are minority student-athletes with at least sophomore academic standing who exhibit athletics ability, academic excellence (a minimum 3.20 grade-point average) and community activism. More than 1,000 student-athletes were nominated from across the nation.
 
It was previously announced that 
Jenna Sanchez had received the publication's award as the top swimmer to be honored.
 
Joining her as 2021-22 honorees were 
Shiori Fukuda of women's tennis, 
Kaleiya Romero of women's golf and 
Isabel Zelaya of women's volleyball.
 
All four student-athletes were all-conference performers this past year. Fukuka was the West Coast Conference Player of the Year. Fukuda, Romero and Zelaya all made their respective All-WCC first teams. Sanchez won two Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference relay titles and was All-PCSC first team in five events.
