Four Waves Earn Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards

MALIBU, California – Four Pepperdine student-athletes have earned 2021-22 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar status, which was recently released by the publication Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are minority student-athletes with at least sophomore academic standing who exhibit athletics ability, academic excellence (a minimum 3.20 grade-point average) and community activism. More than 1,000 student-athletes were nominated from across the nation.

It was previously announced that Jenna Sanchez had received the publication's award as the top swimmer to be honored.

Joining her as 2021-22 honorees were Shiori Fukuda of women's tennis, Kaleiya Romero of women's golf and Isabel Zelaya of women's volleyball.

All four student-athletes were all-conference performers this past year. Fukuka was the West Coast Conference Player of the Year. Fukuda, Romero and Zelaya all made their respective All-WCC first teams. Sanchez won two Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference relay titles and was All-PCSC first team in five events.
