MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team closed out the regular season by defeating Portland 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium and collecting the West Coast Conference series 2-1. The Waves celebrated their nine seniors prior to the game against the Pilots.
Even though the Pilots (31-21, 17-10 WCC) outhit the Waves (24-26, 12-15 WCC) 10-6, it all came down to a pitching duel and a two-run bottom of the eighth inning for Pepperdine to collect the rubber-match win.
BIG WAVES
- Senior infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) went 2-for-4 on the day with one RBI.
- Redshirt junior outfielder Michael Winaker (Walnut Creek, Calif./San Ramon HS) had one hit on the day and crossed home plate twice.
- Freshman infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) had two RBI on the day including one in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Waves the lead.
- Freshman RHP Davis Luikart (Austin, Texas/Regents School of Austin) threw 3.1 innings while allowing three hits and had a career-high three strikeouts. Davis collected his first win of the season.
GAME RECAP
In the top of the third inning, Portland jumped out front first with a single through the right side to score a run and take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Waves answered back to tie the game. With one out, Winaker drew a walk on four straight balls.
Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) plated a single through the left side that put Winaker into scoring position on second base.
Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) followed Walczykowski with a single to left field to load the bases. Conley sent a deep enough fly ball to center field that scored Winaker and tied the game at one apiece.
After three scoreless innings, in the bottom of the eighth,
Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) led off with a walk. Winaker smacked a single into left center that advanced Johnson to third and gave Pepperdine runners on the corners. With one out, Sheehan walked to load the bases again for the Waves. Conley hit a ground ball to the shortstop and as the Pilots' tried to turn the double play, Conley reached first base safely and Johnson scored to give the Waves a 2-1 lead. With two outs and runners on first and third for Pepperdine, Mehlhaff sent a single right back up the middle and scored Winaker for the insurance run to make it 3-1.
In the final top half of the inning, Portland led off with a single to right center. Luikart sat down the next Pilots' batter with a strikeout and the Waves closed out the game with the second double play of the game to hold onto the victory.
