Waves Look for Strong Finish at NCAA Regional

BRYAN, Texas – The Pepperdine men's golf team is still on the right side of the cut line for the NCAA Championships, but things remain close after Tuesday's second round at the NCAA Bryan Regional.

The Waves dropped from second place to fourth place, but only trail first-place Arizona by five shots. More importantly, Pepperdine will start the final round eight shots ahead of sixth place. The top five teams qualify for the NCAA finals.

The Waves have a two-day total of an 8-under 568 (279-289) at the par-72 Traditions Club.

William Mouw was the only Wave to finish below-par on Tuesday as he shot a 3-under 69.

The defending national champs are trying to advance to the NCAA finals for the third consecutive time and the 12th time in program history. The NCAA Championships are set for May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

- Senior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for fourth place with a 5-under 139 (67-72). His even-par round included 16 pars and a birdie on 14. He'll start the final round just one shot off the lead.
- Junior William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) moved up to a tie for eighth place with a 4-under 140 (71-69). He had an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole, and later had birdies on 11 and 13.
- Senior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 10th place with a 3-under 141 (69-72). His even-par round included four birdies, two on the front nine and two on the back nine.
- Junior Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) is tied for 37th at 148 (72-76). After a tough opening stretch, he was solid over his final 11 holes with 10 pars and a birdie on 15.
- Senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) is tied for 44th at 149 (72-77). He had one birdie on Tuesday.
