Pepperdine Falls to Cal Poly in Midweek

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference matchup to Cal Poly 14-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
 
The Waves (22-25) fell behind the Mustangs (32-20) early on and tried to rally back in the bottom of the eighth inning with five runs to get within two at 8-6, but a six-run top of the ninth secured the win for Cal Poly.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Freshman infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) went 2-for-4 including his seventh home run of the season and a double. Conley crossed the plate twice.
  • Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) was 2-for-5 on the day with one RBI. Both of Bradshaw's hits were doubles.
  • Senior infielder Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) was 2-for-3 and crossed the plate once.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Nolan Lingley (Tracy, Calif./Ripon Christian HS) had two hits on the day.
  • Freshman catcher Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) hit his first career home run, which was a three-run blast. Sheehan collected a new career-high in RBI with three. Sheehan is also currently on an 11-game reached base streak.
  • Junior pinch hitter Ethan Suh (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood HS) hit his first career double.
  • Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had one hit on the day with two walks and crossed the plate once. Peck extended his hitting streak to 10 games and on-base streak to 12 games. 
GAME RECAP
 
In the top of the second inning, Cal Poly took advantage of two Waves' errors and scored five runs on four hits to take an early 5-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, the Mustangs hit an RBI double to right field and added to their lead at 6-0.
 
The Mustangs scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on three hits to make it 8-0. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Conley took the first pitch he saw at-bat over the left field wall to get the Waves on the board at 8-1.
 
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Conley doubled down the left-field line. Mehlhaff roped a single up the middle that advanced Conley to third. With a 3-1 count, Sheehan went yard and cleared the bases to make it 8-4. Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) sent a single into center field with two outs. Peck had a smart at-bat and drew a walk that moved Masino to second. Bradshaw smacked his second double of the game that scored Masino and had the Waves within three at 8-5. Johnson hit an RBI single into left to get within two at 8-6.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Mustangs scored six runs on four hits including a two-run home run to go up 14-6. Cal Poly shut down the Waves in the bottom of the ninth on strikeouts.
 
UP NEXT
 
The Waves will close out the West Coast Conference regular season with a weekend series hosting Portland beginning on Friday, May 20 with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
