SANTA CLARA, California – Four different Waves hit home runs as the Pepperdine baseball team lost to Santa Clara 13-12 on Sunday afternoon at Stephen Schott Stadium in the series finale of their West Coast Conference series. The Broncos collected the series 2-1.
For the third straight game, the Broncos (21-17, 10-8) took an early 7-1 lead, before the Waves (20-18, 8-10) scored 11 runs in six out of the last eight innings to make it 12-7 heading into the final frame. Santa Clara tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and hit a walk-off single to win game three.
Pepperdine had five home runs in game three against Santa Clara, which is a season high as well as tying the second most in program history. The last time five home runs happened in a game was in the 2008 season against Loyola Marymount.
BIG WAVES
- Junior infielder Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) went 2-for-4 on the day, including a solo home run and a three-run home run. This was the second time in Johnson's career he has hit two home runs in a game. Johnson had four RBI, which is one short of his career high, and scored three runs, which ties his career high.
- Junior outfielder Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) went 2-for-4 and crossed the plate twice.
- Freshman infielder Jacob Rebrook (The Woodlands, Texas/The John Cooper School) tied his career-high for hits with two, including his first collegiate home run and a double. Rebrook had career highs in RBI with two and runs scored with two.
- Redshirt junior outfielder Michael Winaker (Walnut Creek, Calif./San Ramon HS) also tied his career high in hits with two.
- Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) knocked a two-run home run, which was his third of the season.
- Freshman infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) hit a three-run home run, which was his fourth of the season and his career.
GAME RECAP
The Broncos got the scoring going early in the bottom of the first inning scoring six runs on four hits to take an early 6-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, Conley was hit by a pitch to give the Waves their first base runner of the inning. With one out, Winaker smacked a double to left center that scored Conley and made it 6-1. In the bottom of the second inning, Santa Clara answered back with one run on two hits and made it 7-1.
In the top of the third inning on a full count, Johnson sent a solo home run over the right-field wall and made it 7-2. In the top of the fourth inning, with two outs and runners on first and second, Johnson hit another home run over the left field wall to get the Waves within two at 7-5. Schoen continued the two-out rally with a double to left field. Bradshaw then sent a rocket over the right field wall, which scored Schoen and tied the game at 7-7. With one out in the top of the fifth inning, Winaker roped a single to left. Rebrook had a count of two balls, and the first strike he saw he took it yard over the right center wall to give the Waves the lead at 9-7.
After another two-out rally for the Waves in the top of the eighth inning put runners on first and second, Conley sent a rocket over the left field wall for a three-run home run to increase the Waves lead at 12-7. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Broncos hit back-to-back singles with no outs to have runners on first and second. Thomas Gould of Santa Clara smacked a three-run home run to get the Broncos back within two at 12-10. Santa Clara had the bases loaded, with the game-winning run on first base. Coleman Brigman of Santa Clara hit a single to center field that scored two to tie the game at 12-12. With the game-winning run 90 feet from the plate, Matt Jew of Santa Clara blooped a walk-off single to right field to collect the win.

The Waves will have an off-week for graduation before heading north of Malibu in order to visit UC Santa Barbara for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, May 3. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
