HENDERSON, Nevada – Both the Pepperdine women's golf team and
Lauren Gomez have taken the lead after Thursday's first round at the West Coast Conference Championships.
On a hot, windy day at the par-72 Reflection Bay Golf Club, the Waves recorded an opening 299 to take a four-stroke advantage over BYU and a six-shot margin over San Francisco. Pepperdine is going for its league-best 19th WCC title at the 25th tournament being held.
Gomez was the only player to break par on Thursday and has taken a five-shot lead in the individual competition.
PLAYER SCORES
- Freshman Lauren Gomez (Murrieta, Calif.) fired a 2-under 70, five shots better than four other competitors that are tied for second. It was her team-best sixth below-par round of the season but the first time she scored something other than 1-under. She had an eagle on the par-5 12th hole and three birdies on the day.
- Sophomore Lion Higo (Gold Coast, Australia) is tied for sixth place after a 76. She birdied the 18th hole.
- Sophomore Kaleiya Romero (San Jose, Calif.) is also tied for sixth with a 76. She had a birdie on 12.
- Junior Reese Guzman (Kahului, Hawai'i) is tied for 12th with a 77. She had birdies on 4 and 7.
- Freshman KaYee Kwok (Tianjin, China) is also tied for 12th with a 77. She had a birdie on 12.
UP NEXT
The Waves will begin teeing off at 7:50 a.m. on Friday for the second round. They'll be paired with BYU and San Francisco.
