Waves Defeat Roadrunners 7-2

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team took down CSU Bakersfield 7-2 in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
 
The Waves (19-16) and Roadrunners (14-20) were tied 1-1 heading into the fourth inning and CSU Bakersfield took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth, but two three-run innings in the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the seventh put Pepperdine on top of the win.
 
BIG WAVES
 
  • Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI.
  • Freshman infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Redshirt junior outfielder Michael Winaker (Walnut Creek, Calif./San Ramon HS) tied his career high for hits with two. Winaker had one RBI and crossed the plate once.
  • Junior LHP Nathan Diamond (Oak Park, Ill./Oak and River Forest HS) threw 2.0 innings and collected his third win of the season in relief.
 
GAME RECAP
 
In the bottom of the first inning with one out, Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) sent a ball over the left-field wall to give the Waves a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, the Roadrunners hit an RBI double to left field and tied the game at 1-1.
 
The Roadrunners took their only lead in the top of the fourth inning on a single to center field and made it 2-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) hit an infield single to third base. Nolan Lingley (Tracy, Calif./Ripon Christian HS) smacked a single to center field that advanced Sheehan to second base. On a Roadrunner wild pitch, Lingley and Sheehan advanced to second and third to give the Waves runners in scoring position. Conley roped an RBI single to left to tie the game at 2-2. Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) blooped an RBI single to left field to give the Waves a 3-2 lead. Pepperdine took advantage of a CSU Bakersfield error that scored the third run of the inning and made it 4-2.
 
In the bottom of the seventh inning with one out, Johnson drew a walk and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) also drew a walk with one out to give the Waves runners on first and second. Winaker smacked a single through the left side that scored Johnson and made it 5-2. Bradshaw hit a single up the middle that scored two insurance runs for the Waves at 7-2.
 
The Waves threw five shutout innings, thanks to Shane Telfer (San Diego,Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS), Jack Chester (Austin, Texas/Hyde Park HS) and Jack Baird (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) before Grant Georges (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) came in, in the top of the ninth inning and retired the Roadrunners in order with two strikeouts and a ground out.

Pepperdine heads to Northern California for a West Coast Conference weekend series at Santa Clara. The series begins on Friday, April 22 with first pitch set for 6 pm. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
