Walczykowski Has Career Night in Game Two Victory Over Titans

FULLERTON, California – Devon Walczykowski had a career night, going 4-for-5 including a solo home run and two doubles, as the Pepperdine baseball team rolled past Cal State Fullerton 12-2 on Saturday night at Goodwin Field.
 
The Waves (7-3) scored a run in eight out of nine innings over the Titans (2-7) who scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth inning after Pepperdine had already built a 9-0 lead. Pepperdine had its second-most hits and RBI of the season with 12 each.
 
BIG WAVES
 
  • Freshman infielder Devon Walczykowski (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Jesuit HS) was 4-for-5 with a solo blast, two doubles and three RBI. He also crossed the plate three times.
  • Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) went 3-for-4 including a solo home run and a double. He also had tied his career-high 3 RBI and two runs scored.
  • Freshman infielder Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) went 2-for-4 including a double and had a career-high two RBI. He also had a career-high two runs scored.
  • Junior RHP Trevor Hinkel (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) threw 5.2 innings only giving up two hits, the first coming in the bottom of the fifth inning. He struck out six batters. He earned his first win of the season.
  • Freshman RHP Bobby Christy (Odessa, Fla./Sickles HS) threw two innings and struck out one batter.
 
GAME RECAP
 
Bradshaw opened up the game with a home run to right field to give the Waves a quick 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, Walczykowski led off with a single and Jacob Rebrook (The Woodlands, Texas/The John Cooper School) drew a walk with one out. Conley hit an RBI single to right center giving Pepperdine a 2-0 lead. Grant Schoen (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas HS) followed up with a double to right center, clearing the bases to make it 4-0. With two outs in the top of the third, Walczykowski hit a blast to left center to extend the lead at 5-0.
 
After a scoreless fourth inning, John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a Titans' wild pitch. Bradshaw drew a walk and both Peck and Bradshaw advanced into scoring position on another wild pitch. Greg Mehlhaff (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas HS) also drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Walczykowski hit a double to the right field warning track, scoring two to make it 7-0. A Pepperdine groundout scored the third run of the inning to increase the lead to 8-0.
 
In the top of the sixth, Peck reached on a fielder's choice and Bradshaw hit an RBI double to right center to make it 9-0. The Titans scored their first run on an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-1. Walczykowski led off the seventh inning with a double to left and Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS) reached on a Cal State Fullerton error. With two outs, Conley doubled to right center scoring the 10th run for the Waves. Cal State Fullerton scored in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single up the middle to make it 10-2.
 
After back-to-back walks in the top of the eighth, Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) hit a single to the shortstop to load the bases. Mehlhaff hit a sacrifice fly to left to extend Pepperdine's lead at 11-2. The Waves added another run in the top of the ninth inning by an RBI single to center field by Bradshaw to give Pepperdine the 12-2 win in game two.

Pepperdine and Cal State Fullerton close out the weekend series on Sunday, March 6. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be live on ESPN+.
