BERKELEY, Calif. – For the third time this season the #5 Pepperdine women's tennis program was engaged in a tight contest with #14 California, but for the second time this year the Bears came out on top as the Waves fell 4-3 at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
Cal (11-5) got the doubles point for the first time in the three meetings this season, as the Bears took court three to open doubles. Cal then took court two moments later to put Pepperdine (13-4) in a 1-0 hole heading into singles play.
Pepperdine took three first sets in singles, and #9 Shiori Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win on court one over #101 Haley Giavara to tie the match up at one apiece. #98 Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Fla.) soon followed with a straight-set win on court six over Valentina Ivanov to give the Waves the lead.
After Cal tied the match up at two with a straight-set win on court five, two wins on the final three courts were needed for each team. The Bears gained the upper hand with a three-set win on court two. The Waves needed wins on courts three and four to secure the victory, but Cal kept the pressure on and got a three-set win on court three to earn the win.
Court four finished to completion, where #79 Janice Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated #122 Katja Wiersholm, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Before today's rubber match, Cal won the first meeting 4-3, while Pepperdine won the second meeting 4-1.
