MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine baseball team dropped game two of the opening West Coast Conference series to San Diego 8-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Toreros (10-7, 1-1) scored in the first two innings, again in the fifth inning and closed out the game in the top of the ninth with five runs while keeping the Waves (10-7, 1-1) scoreless until the sixth inning.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore outfielder Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling HS) went 2-for-4 and had the Waves' only RBI.
- Sophomore infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had two hits on the day including a double and crossed the plate once.
- Junior outfielder Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) had a double.
GAME RECAP
San Diego led off the game in the first inning with a solo home run to left field to take an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, the Toreros scored their second run of the game on a bunt single to make it 2-0.
After a quick third and fourth inning, San Diego hit an RBI single to right field and scored an insurance run to make it 3-0 after five innings. The Waves led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to right center by Peck.
Cam Conley (Lincoln University, Pa./Malvern Prep) followed Peck with a single of his own up the middle. With two outs, and Peck in scoring position, Bradshaw ripped one into left field and got the Waves on the board at 3-1.
In the top of the final inning, San Diego added five more runs to extend their lead to 8-1. In the bottom of the ninth with one out, Landis drew a walk.
Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz./Mountain Pointe HS) hit a two-out single to right field that moved Landis to third base. The Toreros made a diving catch to get the third out and took game two to split the series.

The Waves and Toreros have the rubber match of the series on Sunday, March 20 with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
