Waves Suffer Road Loss to No. 20 BYU

PROVO, Utah – The Pepperdine women's basketball team suffered a 104-53 road loss to No. 20 BYU on Thursday night.
The Cougars (20-2, 10-1) dominated the shooting at 62.5% to the Waves' (7-11, 3-6) 31.7%.
BIG WAVES
The Cougars started the game with a six-point scoring run. After back and forth shots, BYU scored another eight consecutive points to extend the lead at 18-6. The Cougars scored another eight straight to go up 26-8. Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) hit a three-point shot, but the Cougars had the last shot of the first quarter to lead, 29-11.
In the second quarter, Ruffus-Milner hit a jumper to get the score at 34-13. Pepperdine had a six-point scoring run of their own to get the margin under 20 at 40-21. After another six points from the Cougars, the Waves scored five straight points of their own to get the score at 48-29. Ruffus-Milner knocked down a free throw to head into the half at 52-33.
BYU scored the first basket of the third quarter, but Stedman countered with a basket of her own. The Cougars went on another seven-point scoring run to go up 61-35. Meaali'i Amosa (Garden Grove, Calif./Mater Dei HS) had a jump shot, but the Cougars went on a 22-point scoring run to end the third leading 85-39.
The final frame started with free throws by the Cougars, but the Waves had free throws of their own thanks to Rosemary Odebunmi (Ado-Ekiti,Nigeria/Sierra Canyon HS), who made her first appearance as a Wave and collected two-points, and Helena Friend (Huntington Beach, Calif./Blair Academy) to get the score at 89-44. BYU and Pepperdine exchanged shots, but the Cougars would collect the win.

The Waves head home to Malibu to host San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 12 as part of a day and night double header with the men's team. Tipoff against the Toreros is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
