Waves Roll Past Roadrunners 80-53

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team rolled past CSU Bakersfield 80-53 on Wednesday night inside Firestone Fieldhouse.
 
The Waves (4-5) outshot the Roadrunners (2-3) 42.4% to 27.8% and led with 52 rebounds compared to the opposition's 43. After a decent start in the first two quarters, Pepperdine put the pedal to the metal and marked 27 points in the third quarter and never let up.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore guard Ally Stedman (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle HS) led the way with 21 points. She had six rebounds and two steals.
  • Graduate transfer forward Theresa Grace Mbanefo (Otsego, Minn./Blaine HS/Cornell) had her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Mbanefo also had a season-high three blocks.
  • Junior forward Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) nabbed 13 points and brought down six boards.
  • Graduate transfer guard Marly Walls (Bardstown, Ky./Nelson County HS/Bucknell) also picked up 10 points and led the Waves in assists with six.
  • Sophomore guard Helena Friend (Huntington Beach, Calif./Blair Academy) collected 10 points off the bench.
GAME RECAP
 
In the start of the first quarter, after buckets from each team, CSU Bakersfield collected five points to give them a 7-5 lead. The Waves answered with a nine-point scoring run to earn a 17-9 advantage. The Roadrunners scored the final two points of the first quarter on free throws to cut the deficit to six, 17-11.
 
Friend put up the first shot in the second quarter to give the Waves a 19-11 lead. Pepperdine and CSU Bakersfield went back and forth throughout the rest of the quarter before Simone Johnson of CSUB banked the last bucket at the buzzer to decrease the Waves' advantage to eight, 32-24, heading into the break.
 
Following the break, the Waves had a free throw and a layup to increase the lead to double-digits at 36-26. Pepperdine then scored another nine straight points to go up 48-33. Rounding out the third quarter, the squad notched eight consecutive points to extend the advantage 59-36.
 
In the final frame, the Roadrunners came out firing and nabbed nine straight points to attempt to close the gap, 59-45.  The Waves had other ideas, however, and another eight straight points for the home team put the lead back up to 70-47. After a jump shot and three pointer by CSUB, Pepperdine tallied six straight to increase the advantage to 76-52. Walls and Stedman each drained a bucket to close out the game and collect the victory.
 
STATS
  • Pepperdine forced 16 CSU Bakersfield turnovers compared to 14.
  • The Waves tallied 28 paint points compared to the Roadrunners 24.
  • Pepperdine outscored CSUB in each of the four quarters.
  • The Waves outshot the Roadrunners from inside and outside the arc. The Waves hit 50% from long range compared to the opposition's 27.3%.

The Waves will play the last non-conference game, hosting UC Riverside on Sunday, Dec. 11. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
