Waves Roll Past Cal State LA

Malibu, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's basketball team put together a collective effort that saw multiple career-highs in a non-conference battle over Cal State LA on Monday, winning 92-69 over the Eagles in Firestone Fieldhouse.

Forward Boubacar Coulibaly amassed a career high in scoring with 11 points, while guards Mike Mitchell Jr. and Houston Mallette delivered career highs in assists, dishing out 11 and eight respectively.

BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore Maxwell Lewis (Las Vegas, Nev./AZ Compass Prep) accrued 24 points for a team-high in that category as well as his fifth 20-plus point outing in 11 contests and tacked on four rebounds, five assists and three steals.
  • Freshman Jevon Porter (Columbia, Missouri/Father Tolton Catholic HS) finished with 13 points and six rebounds on the afternoon.
  • Redshirt sophomore Boubacar Coulibaly (Bamako, Mali/USC) added four rebounds to go with his career-high 11 points.
  • Sophomore Mike Mitchell Jr. (San Jose, Calif./Arch Bishop Mitty HS) scored nine points and had only a single turnover in contrast to his 11 assists. The point guard also matched his season high in rebounds, pulling down nine boards.
  • Senior Jan Zidek (Prague, Czech Republic) had 10 points - going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc - and five boards.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
After winning the tip, Pepperdine delivered seven-straight points before the Eagles could get on the board. Back-to-back threes from Lewis helped push the Waves away from Cal State LA early on, as Coulibaly followed with consecutive dunks to go up 30-13 midway through the half. Of Pepperdine's last 14 points of the period, 12 came from beyond the arc as the sophomore trifecta of Lewis, Mitchell Jr. and Mallette yet again proved to be a threat from that range. The Waves finished the half up 51-35, shooting 74.1% from the field and 72.7% from three-point range.
Carson Basham (Phoenix, Ariz./AZ Compass Prep) started off the second half with a stuff, followed by a block and board by the center to get the Waves going. Cal State LA went on a 9-0 run late in the second period, but Pepperdine answered with a run of its own, going 10-0 in an outpouring that included a Jalen Pitre (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly/Woodstock Academy) alley-oop courtesy of Mitchell Jr. The Waves finished the game on two Porter free throws for a 92-69 finish.
