Swim and Dive Drops Pair of Home Duals

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine women's swim and dive program finished its weekend with a pair of duals on Saturday, competing against both UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

In the morning, all three teams competed against each other, but were scored separately in a round-robin style. After diving occurred, the squads went head-to-head in a championship-style meet, with all three teams being scored against each other simultaneously.

MEET RECAP
Pepperdine's divers continued their strong fall with solid performances in the diving portion of the dual as freshman Vivian Vallely (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) took first in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter. In the 1-meter, Vallely had the top score of 235.43 to lead the field. In the 3-meter portion, she scored 248.10 to lead all divers on the day. Pepperdine also had the third and fourth spots on the leaderboard in the 1-meter, as Amanda Wong (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) took second with a score of 219.45 and Lexie Martin (Keller, Texas/Keller HS) came in fourth with a 199.28 showing. In the 3-meter, Bri Cannon (Katy, Texas/Katy HS) took third after posting a score of 219.53, while Wong came in fourth with a 217.35 performance.

Pepperdine's best swims of the day came in the championship-style session in the afternoon. Tay Thomas (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS) earned a victory for the Waves in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.19. In that same event, Kylie Taylor (Eugene, Ore./Churchill HS) and Ellie Hendren (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista HS) took second and third, respectively. Jenna Sanchez (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) earned third in the 50 fly with a time of 25.50.

In the 100 fly, Charli Sunahara (Chino, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala HS) climbed all the way up to third place on the Waves' all-time list for that event with a 57.25 showing. Alexandra Browne (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty HS) improved her standing on the top-10 list in the 100 IM to fifth with a 59.47 time. Browne had a fourth-place finish (50 breast) and a fifth-place finish (100 IM) in the afternoon portion.

The Waves had a balanced attack in the dual session in the morning, as eight different swimmers led the team in the individual events. Sunahara paced Pepperdine in the 100 free, 200 free and the 100 fly. Two other athletes had team bests on the day, as Browne was the team leader in the 50 free and 200 breast, while AJ Adams (Castle Rock, Colo./Valor Christian HS) led the cause in the 200 back and 400 IM.

Pepperdine was defeated by UCSB 221.50-71.50. The Waves also fell to UCSD 229-68. In the championship scoring event, UC San Diego led the three women's squads with 185 points. UCSB had 157.50, while Pepperdine garnered 82.50.

QUOTABLE
Head coach Ellie Monobe said: "We were very excited about the opportunity to host this meet this weekend. We saw some talented teams like UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara who are at the top of the mid-major realm and it was exciting to see our women get up and race against them. I was very impressed with Jenna Sanchez being able to come back after being out for a little bit, she definitely stepped it up on our relays and dominated our sprints as always. Also, a great shoutout for Charli Sunahara racing the Gauchos and Tritons in some off events for her. Overall, I know we're very tired and are heading into rest so it should be a fast couple of meets coming up."

Diving coach Monique Demaisip said: "Overall, I am very pleased with how diving went today! All of the divers have been working on upgrades, so this meet was the perfect opportunity to get off some new dives and compete lists with higher degrees of difficulty before our big midseason meet.

"These past few weeks and back-to-back meets are the highest volume of diving any of our Waves have ever done  — especially our first years — so it's been great to see them keep up and put up a fight. We have a few days to refine some things and work on details before heading to the Trojan Diving Invitational — our midseason meet — so I'm excited to get back to work."

NEXT UP
Pepperdine's divers will compete next weekend (November 11 and 13) at the Trojan Diving Invite hosted by USC. Both swimmers and divers will compete in the final meet of the semester from November 17-19 at Utah Tech in St. George, Utah, for the Trailblazer Invite.
