PLAY-BY-PLAY
After going point-for-point to open the match, a pair of kills from
Emily Hellmuth and an ace from
Meg Brown gave Pepperdine the first lead of the set 6-4. More kills from
Vanessa Polk and
Grace Chillingworth and some errors from the net helped the Waves to an 11-6 advantage. Though the opposition was able to counter and tie things up at the 12-12 mark, pulling ahead at one point 15-13, Pepperdine buckled down and four-consecutive smashes from Brown, Chillingworth twice and Hellmuth extended the squad's lead once again to four-points, 19-15. The Toreros closed the gap again shortly after, 21-21, but a Hellmuth smash and a Polk,
Emma Ammerman block collaboration gave the Waves a one-point advantage 23-22. A final kill from Polk and ace from
Kayleigh Hames shut the set down 25-22 in the Waves favor.
San Diego took no chances to start the second set, however, building a 10-3 lead to kick things off. It would be a lead the home squad would be unable to overcome, though a late set surge with a 4-0 run had the Waves closing the gap before the Toreros closed the door with a 25-19 set win to tie the match.
USD came out strong in the third set as well, building a 7-3 lead early, but back-to-back blocks from Polk with either Chillingworth or Ammerman had the Waves tie the score at 8's and pull ahead by one. After hitting super-sized French fries on the board, 11-11, kills from
Isabel Zelaya and Brown, followed by an ace from the latter earned the squad a three-point lead, 15-12. The Toreros were able to close the gap and pull ahead shortly after though, eventually taking the set 25-20 to take the advantage in the match.
Pepperdine wasn't ready to roll over in the fourth set, however, taking a quick two-point lead at the 6-4 mark with smashes from Brown and Hellmuth. San Diego stayed close yet again, with either side of the net pulling ahead by one or two through 12-12, 18-18 and 20-20 tied scores before the Toreros went on a final six-point run to win the set 25-20 and the match in four.
