PLAY-BY-PLAY
Pepperdine raced out a 5-0 lead to begin the match aided by three consecutive aces by Emma Ammerman. With the score 9-6 in favor of Pepperdine, the Waves kept the Pilots at length throughout the remainder of the set with the help of a 12-2 scoring run to bring the margin to 13 at 21-8 before another Portland timeout. Following the timeout, Chillingworth had a pair of kills and an ace before Hellmuth finished the set off with a smash.

Portland came out swinging in the second set, however, taking an early 3-1 lead on the strength of multiple kills and a Wave service error. Kills by Isabel Zelaya and Meg Brown tied the set up at four and five, respectively, before a Pilot attack error gave the Waves a lead at 6-5 – a lead they would not relinquish the remainder of the set. Hames tabbed a pair of aces to give the Waves their largest lead of the set at the time at 14-7. The biggest lead of the set was 10 when an attack error by Portland gave Pepperdine a 20-10 lead. Portland would not go away, though, as they rallied with four consecutive points to force the first Pepperdine timeout of the match leading 20-14. Portland could get no closer than five, though, as the Waves secured the last four points with the help of a Zelaya set point ace to take a 2-0 lead.

The teams traded points in the early going of the third, but a 5-0 Portland run put Pepperdine in a 10-5 hole. Pepperdine responded with a 3-0 run of its own which forced a Pilot timeout as Pepperdine trailed 11-10. Hellmuth tied the set up at 13 apiece before Pepperdine took the lead for good at 14-13 thanks to a Chillingworth kill. Following a Zelaya kill, Portland called another timeout with the Waves in front 19-15. The opposition would have one last run, cutting the lead to 22-20 after a service ace. Following the timeout, the Waves fought off another Pilots' rally to take the set 25-22 and the match 3-0 on a Chillingworth kill.
