Waves Drop High-Scoring GCC Tourney Game to UCI

SANTA BARBARA, California – Despite one of its best offensive showings of the year, the Pepperdine men's water polo team saw its season come to an end on Friday evening, as the Waves lost 19-18 to UC Irvine in the opening match of the Golden Coast Conference Tournament.

The fifth-seeded and ninth-ranked Waves (13-14) hit on two-thirds of their shots (18-for-27, .667), while the fourth-seeded and 13th-ranked Anteaters (15-12) made 55.9% of their attempts (19-for-34).

The Waves scored six goals in the first period and seven in the third quarter, but a second quarter where they were limited to one goal proved to be the difference.

BIG WAVES
  • Graduate attacker Dennis Blyashov (Carlsbad, Calif./Harvard) matched his season high with six goals. He also had six goals against the Anteaters back on September 25.
  • Senior attacker Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) was in on more than half of the Pepperdine goals, as he recorded two goals and eight assists.
  • Senior center Austin Smit (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) scored a career-high four goals.
  • Freshman attacker Adam Csapo (Budapest, Hungary) had three goals.
GAME RECAP

Goals by freshman attacker Sandor Gal (Budapest, Hungary) and Smit gave Pepperdine its first lead at 3-2 less than three minutes into the game. The teams traded goals, with Pepperdine maintaining the advantage, for about the next eight minutes, until senior utility Kaden Kaneko (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) put the Waves up 7-6 with 5:29 to go in the second quarter.

UCI then went on the first scoring run of the game, notching four straight to put the Anteaters ahead 10-7 with 7:32 left in the third quarter. The Waves would never lead again. Blyashov came back with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to one at 10-9, and Smit eventually tied the game at 13 with 1:44 left in the third period.

It was 14-14 late in the third after another Blyashov tally, but UCI scored four of the next five goals to take an 18-15 lead with less than 3 1/2 minutes to go. Down 19-16 with 2 1/2 minutes left, Csapo netted the game's final two goals with 2:18 and 0:17 left before time ran out on the Waves.

UCSB got a seven-goal performance from Dylan Patist.
