LAS VEGAS, Nev. –
Shiori Fukuda of the Pepperdine women's tennis program, ranked 31
st in the country, captured the singles championship on Sunday at the Freeman Memorial Championship on the campus of UNLV.
Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) took down #86-ranked Mananchaya Sawangkaew from Oklahoma State in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to claim the title.
This was the 19
th installment of the Freeman Memorial Championship. Fukuda became the first Wave to win a title either in singles or in doubles in the prestigious tournament.
Nikki Redelijk (Windermere, Florida) continued her strong weekend with another ranked win, her third of the tournament. On Sunday, she defeated Oklahoma State's Oona Orpana, ranked 55
th, in an extra match.
Overall, the Waves compiled a 17-7 singles record against the nation's best in Las Vegas.
