LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Pepperdine women's tennis program will be well represented on championship Sunday as
Shiori Fukuda advanced to the singles final and the duo of
Savannah Broadus and
Janice Tjen reached the doubles semifinal after an eventful day at the Freeman Memorial Championship hosted by UNLV.
Fukuda (Tokyo, Japan) won two singles matches on Saturday, including a straight-set, semifinal victory over teammate
Lisa Zaar (Stockholm, Sweden) to reach Sunday's final. Zaar had her own impressive victory after taking down #55 Oona Orpana from Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals. Broadus (Carrollton, Texas) and Tjen (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated the #24-ranked Florida duo of Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein to reach the doubles semifinals.
In added consolation matches, the Waves compiled two impressive ranked wins as
Victoria Flores (Fort Dodge, Iowa) defeated #9 Connie Ma from Stanford in a three-set thriller and Tjen took down Zein, ranked #34 in singles, in a three-set match as well.
