Waves Record Solid Showing at CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, California – The Pepperdine women's swimming and diving team completed its second dual meet in as many days on Saturday, with Emily Morton and the 200 free relay team winning events, but the Waves narrowly fell to CSU Bakersfield 156-108.

Originally, Saturday's meet was to be a tri-meet with Fresno Pacific as the third squad, but the Sunbirds were unable to compete due to COVID-19 protocols.

MEET RECAP

Morton (Golden, Colo./Lakewood HS) continued her strong showing this weekend by posting a victory in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:10.77. She also took second in the 100 breast and the 200 back with times of 1:07.84 and 2:07.29, respectively.

Alexandra Browne (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty HS) also claimed second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:33.55.

To open the meet, Pepperdine's 400 medley relay crew of Jasmine Williams (Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS), Browne, Haley Bergthold (Fairfax, Va./Woodson HS) and McKenzie Kelly (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla Country Day School/California Baptist) came in second with a time of 4:03.95, six seconds ahead of the third-place team.

The 200 free relay team of Browne, Williams, Kelly and Emma Purdy (Truckee, Calif./Truckee HS) capped off the meet with a victory. The foursome posted a time of 1:41.18. The Waves finished in second in this event as well after Lindsay Hemming (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS), Bergthold, Tay Thomas (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS) and Ellie Mashkovich (Calabasas, Calif./Westlake HS) posted a time of 1:41.98.

QUOTABLE

Head Coach Ellie Monobe said: "We had a solid finish to an eventful weekend of racing. After a strong performance against Fresno, we showed up today a little tired but built momentum as we went. Senior Emily Morton had the standout swim today, taking the win in the 200 IM against a deep Bakersfield lineup.

"All in all, without racing for about two months, I think our women handled themselves appropriately and we are excited to see how the remainder of the dual meet season unfolds."

NEXT UP: Pepperdine will compete at the WCC Cup in San Diego next weekend, January 21-22.
