OLYMPIA FIELDS, Illinois – The Pepperdine men's golf team completed its first round since winning the national championship last spring but the Waves find themselves in 12th place after Friday's action at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational.

The Waves shot an opening-round 293 at the par-70 Olympia Fields Country Club and are 12 shots back of the leader, Oklahoma State.

Pepperdine's first tournament of the season features the top five teams that were in the Bushnell Golfweek coaches preseason poll and 10 from the top 25. The Waves were ranked #1 in the preseason poll (and are now #3).

PLAYER SCORES

Senior Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for 22nd after a 72. He had one birdie on Friday.
Senior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) is tied for 32nd after a 73. He had a team-high four birdies, including two consecutive on holes 2 and 3.
Junior Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) is also tied for 32nd after a 73. He posted three birdies today.
Senior Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 51st after a 75. He had one birdie.
Junior William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) is tied for 70th after a 77.

UP NEXT

The Waves are paired with Stanford and Illinois for Saturday's second round and they'll start on the 10th hole beginning at 8:15 a.m. CT / 6:15 a.m. PT.
