Men's Water Polo Beats LMU at Overtime Buzzer

LOS ANGELES, California – The #10 Pepperdine men's water polo team scored twice in the final 15 seconds of overtime, including the game-winning goal by Anthony D'Ambra with one second left, to stun PCH Cup rival and #20-ranked Loyola Marymount 11-10 on Sunday.

The Waves (4-2) overcame a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to get the game into overtime. They also managed to overcome the Lions' (2-3) advantage on the power play, as LMU went 6-for-12 compared to Pepperdine's 1-for-6.

BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS), in his first weekend back after competing for the U.S. at the Junior World Championships, scored a game-high four goals.
  • Sophomore attacker Anthony D'Ambra (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) scored twice, including the game-winner.
  • Senior attacker Balazs Kosa (Budapest, Hungary) added a pair of goals, both in overtime.
  • Senior goalie John Claude Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) was credited with 12 saves.
GAME RECAP

The Lions scored three power-play goals in the first quarter to take a 3-2 lead, but the Waves held LMU scoreless in the second period to go up 4-3. The Waves took their only two-goal lead midway through the third quarter on a strike by senior utility Sean Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS), but LMU came back with the next three goals to lead 6-5 after three periods. The Lions led 8-6 with under four minutes to play but the Waves tied it on two goals by Tierney, one that was even-strength with 3:22 left and the other on a five-meter penalty with 32 seconds remaining.

The Waves scored first in overtime on a Kosa goal, but the Lions got the next two to take a 10-9 lead, and held on to that one-goal lead into the final minute of the second overtime. With 15 seconds left, Kosa scored to tie it. After a Lion miss, a quick counterattack got the ball into the hands of D'Ambra, who scored with one second remaining on the clock.
