Waves Remain Undefeated in Athens, Reverse-Sweep Georgia to Close

ATHENS, Ga. — A three-set sweep over Morehead State and a 3-2 reverse sweep over tournament-host Georgia had fans of the Pepperdine women's volleyball team on the edge of their seats on Saturday, as the Waves won the pair of matches to take home the Classic City Clash title and go 3-0 to start the 2021 campaign.

Pepperdine posted 25-19, 25-21 and 26-24 set scores in the first match of the day, coming back late in the third set from a 24-21 deficit to win over Morehead State.  The Waves had a slow start to the final match of the weekend, falling behind with 25-17 and 26-24 set losses to Georgia, but rallied with 25-22, 25-16 and 15-11 set wins to close things out on a high note.

After having fell behind 2-0 to the Bulldogs, the Waves put it all on the line, rallying back to force a fifth set.  In the fifth, Pepperdine put the Malibu Roofing Company to action early and back-to-back rejections from Isabel Zelaya with either Meg Brown or Reagan Goeke put the squad ahead 4-2.  A Zelaya ace, followed by kills from Emma Ammerman helped keep the Waves in the lead 9-5 before the opposition would start to make a rally effort of their own.  A smash from Brown, followed by a block from Zelaya, Goeke kept the momentum with Pepperdine, however, and the Waves were able to capitalize on some UGA errors to secure the 15-11 set win and 3-2 overall victory.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
In the first match, the Waves came out swinging, pulling ahead 5-1 to set the tone.  It would be a lead Pepperdine would keep throughout, posting kills from Grace Chillingworth and Rachel Ahrens en route to an 8-2 advantage.  Late in the action, more smashes from Chillingworth and an Ahrens' ace put the squad up 21-11.  It would be a lead Pepperdine would use to close, giving up a few points to the Eagles, but buckling down to close the door 25-19.

In the second set, each side went point-for-point through the 4-4 mark before kills from Rosie Ballo and another Ahrens' ace put the team up 10-5.  Morehead State tied things up at 12's and each side exchanged points through a 19-19 score.  A block from Isabel Zelaya and Meg Brown helped the cause late and a final Ahrens' smash gave the Waves a 2-0 lead with the 25-21 set victory.

The Eagles came out firing in the third set intent on making an extra set push, amassing a 6-1 lead to kick  things off.  The opposition eventually worked ahead to a 14-5 lead over the Waves, but Pepperdine would allow no let-up.  A string of kills and a pair of aces from Ahrens helped the cause late in the action and brought the Waves within five points, 18-13.  Back-to-back kills from Chillingworth and Brown put the Waves down only two, 23-21, but the opposition capitalized on a Waves' error to reach set point.  In a great showing of perseverance, kills from Brown tied things up 24-24 and a big solo block from Ballo put Pepperdine ahead by one.  A final ace from Brown closed the match with a Waves' sweep on a 26-24 final set victory.

Against Georgia, the Waves went down by two sets to open the match.  Despite strong offensive outputs in each set, UGA came away with 25-17, 26-24 set wins to put the Waves on their heels.

Pepperdine refused to let up, however, and came out strong in the third.  With a block collaboration from Zelaya and Brown, followed by smashes from Chillingworth and the Waves were ahead 10-8.  Pepperdine maintained a small lead throughout the second half of the set, pulling ahead to a 19-14 advantage with kills from Ahrens before the opposition countered to bring the score within one 19-18.  The Waves buckled down yet again, though, and kills from Ahrens and Chillingworth put Pepperdine at an opportunity to close the set and extend the match.  A final kill from Brown would push the Waves to a 25-22 set win.

Pepperdine would show no let-up from the previous set win, busting out to an 8-4 lead with an ace from Zelaya and kills from Goeke and Ahrens.  The waves kept pounding down with smashes from Chillingworth and a pair of block collaborations from Goeke, Ammerman and Brown, Ammerman to make it 14-6 down the back stretch.  Though UGA was able to gather a few points before the set closed, an Ahrens' ace, followed by kills from Ammerman closed the set 25-16 and forced a fifth.

After securing the momentum with third and fourth set wins, the Waves worked ahead in the fifth to secure the victory and remain untarnished in Georgia.
