#21 Waves Sweep Past K-State

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The #21 Pepperdine women's volleyball team opened the UC Santa Barbara-hosted Gaucho Invitational with a straight-sweep over Kansas State in the Thunderdome on Friday afternoon.  Though offensive efforts on each side were relatively similar, the Waves capitalized on a 14-7 service error differential to win the match 25-22, 32-30, 25-22.

Meg Brown led the Waves, a team that opens with a 4-0 start after the win, with 15 kills on a .565 clip.  Rachel Ahrens marked her first double-double of the season, and fifth-career, with 11 kills and 12 digs, while leading Pepperdine with four blocks alongside Rosie Ballo

The Waves will close out the tournament tomorrow with a 9:30 AM matchup against San Diego State and a 7 PM match against the Gauchos.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves opened up the match with a 9-5 run, fueled by kills form Rachel Ahrens, an ace from Meg Brown and a block collaboration from Ahrens and Rosie Ballo.  Pepperdine kept in the lead throughout the set, though the Wildcats were able to close the score within two-points multiple times.  Ultimately, kills from Brown kept the Waves ahead and the team was able to capitalize on K-State errors near the end to close the set 25-22.

The second set was tighter than the first, however, going point-for-point through the majority of the action.  Early Ballo, Ahrens block efforts, along with big smashes from Grace Chillingworth and Emma Ammerman helped the cause and gave Pepperdine the slight 15-13 edge.  Madison Shields was able to find the floor for an ace and Isabel Zelaya got sneaky at the net with a dump.  The opposition was able to counter with some strong offensive efforts of their own, though, tying the set at 23's.

K-State had the first set-point opportunity, but the Waves fought it along with two others off and tied it at 26-26.  The Wildcats fended off two Waves' set-point opportunities as well before evening things up.  Each side fended off one more set-point chance again before Pepperdine was able to capitalize on a kill from Zelaya and a service error from across the net to make it 31-30. Rosie Ballo would be the Wave to deliver the final blow of the set, putting it down to win the set 32-30.

With a 2-0 lead heading into the third set, Pepperdine used the momentum from the previous set to pull ahead 13-8 early with kills from Chillingworth, Brown and Ahrens.  The lead wouldn't go much further than that though, as the Wildcats fought back to bring the score within two-points at 20-18 and then one-point at 21-20.  A quick kill from Ahrens, followed by another Ahrens, Ballo block along with some errors from across the net made it 24-22.  The opposition put up one more attack error to close the action out and make it a 3-0 Waves' sweep.
