Pepperdine Sweeps Through Day One of WCC Championships

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – The No. 2-seeded Pepperdine beach volleyball team, a squad ranked 13^th in the AVCA Coaches Poll this week, swept past No. 3-seeded Saint Mary's and No. 7-seeded Portland to open the West Coast Conference Championships at Dockweiler Beach on Friday.

Sutton Mactavish and Simone Priebe clinched both of the matches for the Waves (13-15) en route to 5-0 finishes and a trip through the winner's bracket to day two. All of the Pepperdine duos went undefeated in sets, winning 2-0 on all courts throughout the day.

MATCH RECAPS
In the first match against the Pilots, the Waves came out swinging, collecting first set wins on all five courts to set the tone. Katie Gavin and Kristine Briede were nearly untouchable on court five, posting an impressive 21-4, 21-10 win to put the Waves on the board early. Carly Skjodt and Melanie Paul were close behind with a 21-10, 21-12 win on court one to put Pepperdine in a position to clinch.

Sutton Mactavish and Simone Priebe then clinched the overall win for the squad, posting a commanding 21-4, 21-12 win in the No. 2 slot for the 3-0 advantage. Mary Sinclair and Gracie Pedersen and Brook Bauer and Alexis Filipponne then closed things up with 21-11, 21-8 and 21-14, 21-12 victories on courts four and two respectively.

In the second dual against Saint Mary's, Pepperdine once again came out with first set wins on all five courts. Skjodt and Paul finished up first in the No. 1 position, marking a 21-16, 21-11 win to put their team on the board. Sinclair and Pedersen finished close behind with a 21-11, 21-8 win in the No. 4 slot.

Mactavish and Priebe clinched for the Waves in the match yet again on court three, posting a 21-14, 21-10 win. Gavin and Briede and Bauer and Filippone then closed up shop with 21-18, 21-14 and 21-14, 21-12 wins in the No. 5 and 2 positions respectively.

NEXT UP
The Waves advanced through the winner's bracket and will take on top-seeded PCH Cup rival LMU at 9 a.m. The winner of that dual will advance to the Championship matchup at 1:30 p.m., while the non-advancing team will drop to play at 12 p.m. in the lower bracket.
