#8 Pepperdine Splits Closing Day of Arizona Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The #8 Pepperdine beach volleyball team split the closing day of the Arizona Invitational at Bear Down Beach on Saturday afternoon, defeating #10 Grand Canyon 3-2 before falling 4-1 to tournament-host #13 Arizona.

Alexis Filippone and Brook Bauer went undefeated throughout the tournament, winning two matches in the opening day of competition as well as a pair of victories in the top spot on day two for a 4-0 run as a duo.

The Waves close out the tournament having gone 3-1, finishing with a 7-12 overall record as the squad returns to Malibu this week. Overall in the past two weeks, Pepperdine has gone 5-2 overall.

MATCH RECAPS
The Waves came out to win first sets in the top three positions, while the Lopes gained the advantage on courts four and five. Though the opposition won first on court five, the Waves quickly countered with a 21-16, 21-10 win from Sutton Mactavish and Mary Sinclair in the No. 3 slot. GCU took another point away with a win in the No. 4 spot, but Pepperdine was close with leads on the remaining courts.

Brook Bauer and Alexis Filippone tied things up on court one with a pair of 21-18 set wins to put the Waves in a position to clinch. Melanie Paul and Simone Priebe had won their first set 21-18 in the No. 2 position and used it to gain momentum in the second set en route to a 21-15 set win to clinch the overall victory.

Bauer and Filippone on one started off the second dual of the day on the right foot as well, quickly amassing a 21-14, 21-12 victory to put their team on the board. Arizona then took wins on courts four and five to pull ahead over the Waves.

After both courts two and three extended to third sets, the match was anyone's to take. The Wildcats would be the pair to do it on court three, however, taking a close 19-21, 24-22, 15-10 final score to clinch the dual. Arizona would battle out an extra points third set win on court two to make it a 4-1 end result.

NEXT UP
Next week, the Waves stay on the road, trekking to Long Beach State on April 8 and UC Davis on April 10.
