Waves Earn Victory in Final Midweek Game

LOS ANGELES – The Pepperdine baseball team played its final midweek game of the year on Tuesday, defeating the University of Southern California 5-2 at Dedeaux Field.

The Waves (14-16) got a solid pitching performance from starter Tyler Murrah, and two RBI from Joe Caparis in the win over the Trojans (18-17).

BIG WAVES
  • Redshirt sophomore LHP Tyler Murrah (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) made the first start of his career and threw five shutout innings. He also had six strikeouts and surrendered just two walks.
  • Senior catcher Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) was the only Wave with multiple RBI on the night, with two. He had an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to drive in the runs.
  • Freshman infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) had two hits on the night.
  • Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) had an RBI double in the fifth inning.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Pepperdine got on the board first in the second inning. After a Peck single, Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) reached on a throwing error. Both then moved up a spot on the bases thanks to a wild pitch. Peck scored thanks to an RBI groundout from Zach Chonkich (Redlands, Calif/Redlands HS). Caparis then singled into center field to score Johnson and give the Waves a 2-0 lead through two innings.

In the fourth, the Waves got hit by two pitches, and a walk loaded the bases. Caparis got his second RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly to center. Then Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) singled through the right side to put the Waves up 4-0 through three.

After a Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) walk and stolen base with two outs in the fifth, Lutes doubled down the left field line, bringing in the Waves' fifth run of the game.

Murrah got the first start of his career and made the most of it. He exited the game after the fifth inning. He struck out six batters, didn't give up a run and walked just two batters.

The Trojans got their first run in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout. Pepperdine held a 5-1 lead through six innings.

USC added a run in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Two strikeouts with the bases loaded from Dylan Schwartz (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) limited the damage to just one run, and kept the Waves lead at 5-2 through eight innings.
