MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team fell in game two to Loyola Marymount 5-4 on Saturday.
Billy Cook and
Justin Lutes both homered in the game.
The Waves (12-16, 5-6 WCC) had a three-run lead in the ninth, but the Lions (14-22, 7-10 WCC) came all the way back and scored four runs to take the lead.
BIG WAVES
- Redshirt junior RHP Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) threw five innings, gave up just one run and struck out four on the day.
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) hit a home run in the fourth inning to give the Waves the lead.
- Senior utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
It was a pitcher's duel throughout, as neither starter gave up a run through three innings. Lutes led the fourth off with a home run off the scoreboard in right field, giving the Waves a 1-0 lead through four innings of play.
Pepperdine got another run in the fifth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from
Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS)
. John Peck led the inning off with a single, and got to second thanks to another single, this time from
Joe Caparis. After a passed ball, Peck scored from third on the Alexiades fly ball, giving the Waves a 2-0 lead through five innings.
The Lions got their first run in the sixth inning on an RBI single up the middle, but
Brandon Llewellyn (Colleyville, Texas/IMG Academy) entered the game and shut the door to limit the damage. Pepperdine answered in the bottom of the seventh after a
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y./Trinity-Pauling HS) single and a Cook home run, putting the Waves up 4-1 through six.
In the ninth, the Lions got a bases-loaded walk to cut the lead to two runs. Another bases-loaded walk got the Lions to within one. Then, a two-RBI double in the right-center field gap gave the Lions a 5-4 lead. The Waves got a runner on in the bottom of the ninth, but a double play ended the game.
