Waves Can't Complete Comeback Against Bruins

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team jumped out to an early lead on Tuesday, but ultimately fell to UCLA 5-4 at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Â

The Waves (12-14) got three runs in the first inning, but a three-run third gave the Bruins (22-11) a lead they would never relinquish.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Bruins got the scoring started in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. Pepperdine answered back in the home half when, after Wyatt Young and Billy Cook both walked, Justin Lutes drove a ball into the right-center field gap for a two-RBI double. Connor Bradshaw then doubled down the left field line, plating Lutes to give the Waves a 3-0 lead through one inning of play.

UCLA retook the lead in the third, scoring three runs on two hits, taking a 4-3 lead. The Bruins added to their lead in the top of the fourth, scoring a run to take a 5-3 lead.

Pepperdine got a big leadoff home run from John Peck, but could not complete the comeback, falling a run short.

The Waves are back in West Coast Conference action this weekend, playing host to PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount. Game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday.

- Freshman infielder John Peck (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) hit a solo home run to lead off the ninth inning for the Waves, getting Pepperdine back within a run. It was his only hit of the day.
- Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) had a two-RBI double in the first inning.
- Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) was the only Wave with multiple hits on the day, as he produced two singles.
