Waves Walk Off to Win Game Two Against Gonzaga

MALIBU, Calif.Reese Alexiades of the Pepperdine baseball team beat out a two-out ground ball to shortstop, allowing the winning run to cross the plate in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Waves a 4-3 victory over Gonzaga.
 
The Waves (12-12, 5-3 WCC) led for the majority of the game before the Bulldogs (21-13, 10-4 WCC) took the lead in the seventh inning. Pepperdine scored two unanswered runs to win the game in the last half inning.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) played the hero on the day, going 2-for-4 including the walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) had one hit on the day, but it was a big one – a 410-foot home run to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Junior RHP Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) was dealing in his first start of the year. He threw six complete innings of shutout baseball, striking out two batters and not allowing any walks. He gave up just three hits.
 
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got on the board first in the fourth inning. Wyatt Young singled up the middle to lead the inning off. Reese Alexiades then doubled to the right-center field gap, advancing Young to third. Justin Lutes then hit a fly ball deep enough to score Young from third and give the Waves a 1-0 lead. Ryan Johnson then singled through the right side to score Alexiades, giving the Waves a 2-0 lead through four innings of play.
 
Gonzaga got its first run in the top of the seventh after a double, walk and another double, cutting the Waves' lead to one run. A bases-loaded walk tied the game at two. The Bulldogs took the lead on a bases-loaded passed ball and led 3-2 through seven innings of play.
 
Pepperdine tied the game up at three runs in the eighth inning on a 410-foot solo home run. Through eight innings, the game was tied at three runs apiece.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Aharon Modlin reached first on a dropped-third strike. He stole second and reached third on a Young single. Alexiades then hit a chopper to shortstop, and beat the throw to ensure the victory for the Waves.
