Irvine, Calif. — Pepperdine closed out the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference championships with three more titles and a school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay en route to a second-place finish on Friday.
Pepperdine finished the meet with 1490 points — a mere four points behind Biola.
"I think they did a phenomenal job," Pepperdine head coach Ellie Monobe said. "They knew what they needed to do, went in and handled the meet in a very business-like manner."
Emily Morton (Golden, Colo./Lakewood HS) and Jasmine Williams (Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS) went 1-2 in the 200-yard backstroke to kick off the action. Morton, who set the school record and placed second in the event at last year's PCSC's, won with a 2:02.41, whereas Williams swam a new collegiate-best with a 2:03.65.
"They've put a lot of trust in our plan and in we're doing," Monobe said of the sophomores. "It's been neat to watch them grow. I've been challenging them quite a bit, and they've risen to every challenge. They are definitely both seasoned athletes both mentally and physically, and they're very strategic and smart."
In the penultimate event of the day, Olivia Kayye (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill HS) took an early lead in the 1,000-yard freestyle and didn't look back. The junior, who placed 21st in the same event last year, won her first PCSC title by swimming a 10:36.18, which was over six seconds ahead of the next finisher.
"Olivia has been doing the training all year, and we've been getting her to buy in to our plan and then building her confidence from there," Monobe said of Kayye. "Taking the lead in the 1,000 goes to show how confident she was throughout the year."
Just as it had done to start the PCSC Championships, Pepperdine won another thrilling relay against Biola.
All four Waves broke 52 seconds in the 400-yard freestyle relay: Senior Sammie Slater (Sonora, Calif./Sonora HS) led the Waves with a 51.53, followed by Paige Tattersall (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), who swam a 51.85. By the time Williams (51.91) was halfway through her leg, the Waves had a two-second lead over second-place Biola. Nevertheless, Jenna Sanchez (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) not only held off Biola's anchor, but also maintained the Waves' two-second lead by swimming a 51.17 split — a time faster than the school record in the open 100-yard freestyle.
"Going into that last event, I told the girls to finish out the meet like they were champions, and they rose to the occasion," Monobe said. "We wanted to send a message to the rest of the conference. That relay had a lot of heart."
The quartet's 3:26.46 was nearly two seconds faster than the previous record of 3:28.32, which was set at the PCSC Championships last year.
To conclude the three-day meet, head coach Ellie Monobe was named the PCSC Coach of the Meet. The last time a Pepperdine coach has been presented with this award was in 2020, by Jana Vincent.
In total, Pepperdine broke three school records and won nine events, including four relays at the 2021 PCSC Championships. Morton — who won three individual titles (200-yard backstroke, 200 IM, 400 IM) and two relay titles on the Waves' 200 and 400 medley teams — was Pepperdine's top scorer of the meet with 96 points.
