Waves Roll Through Final Regular Season Contest

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The #5 Pepperdine men's water polo team won its final regular season game of the year on Sunday, defeating San Jose State 16-6.

The Waves (11-3, 4-1 GCC) kept up the offensive onslaught all day, proving to omuch for the Spartans (2-6, 1-4 GCC)

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Waves had the hot hand early on, as back-to-back goals from Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) and Austin Smit (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) made it 2-0 Waves. After the Spartans got on the board, the Waves went off on a four-goal run, getting two goals from Jarvis, completing his hat trick, as well as goals from Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) and Sean Ferrari (Redwood Hills, Calif./St. Francis HS) to take a 6-1 lead. San Jose State scored with just seconds left in the quarter, but the Waves led 6-2 after eight minutes of play.

After the Spartans scored the first goal of the second quarter, the Waves came charging back, getting a backhand goal from Nicholas Fichmann (São Paolo Brazil/Orange Coast College) as well as two more goals from Ferrari to take a 9-3 lead. Fichmann got his second goal of the day to get the Waves into double digits soon after, giving the Waves a 10-3 halftime lead.

Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard Westlake HS) got the scoring started for the Waves in the second half, putting a lob over the keeper's hands to give the Waves an 11-3 lead. Matt Outcalt (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) got his first goal of the season to put the Waves up 12-3, and was quickly followed by Tierney's second of the day, extending the Waves' lead further, to 13-3. Max Sprute (Van Nuys, Notre Dame HS) scored the first goal of the Waves in the fourth quarter, giving the Waves a 14-3 lead. After a Spartan Goal, Xavier Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) found the back of the net to put the Waves up 15-4 . Matt Outcalt got his second goal of the game, converting a five-meter penalty to put the Waves up 16-5. The Spartans scored again to make it 16-6 just before the final buzzer sounded.

UP NEXT

The Waves finish their regular season as Golden Coast Conference champions, but due to there only being two teams competing in conference play, will not receive an automatic bid into the NCAA national championship tournament. Pepperdine will have to get in via an at-large bid, and the full tournament will be announced on the evening of March 7.
