PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Lopes opened up the scoring in their half of the first inning on a two-RBI double to take a 2-0 lead through one full inning of play.
Pepperdine answered in the top of the second to get on the board.
Aharon Modlin hit a double into the left center field gap and
John Peck lined a ball into the left field corner, scoring Modlin for an RBI double. A slow groundball to short resulted in a throwing error, allowing
Joe Caparis to reach, and Peck did not break stride as he was moving on contact, and came around to score, tying the game at two runs.
In the third, the Waves took advantage of a couple of mistakes by the Lopes. With two outs,
Connor Bradshaw singled into right. He came all the way around to score on two throwing errors by GCU. Modlin hit a high chopper to third base, which was thrown away. Modlin took off for second, and another ball was thrown away, allowing Modlin to be safe and for Bradshaw to come around to score the go-ahead run and put the Waves up 3-2 through three innings.
In the fourth,
Wyatt Young hit a single up the middle and was brought in by a
Grant Schoen pinch hit double off the wall in right center, giving the Waves a 4-2 lead. The Lopes got a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded ground ball. A diving play from Modlin kept any more runs scoring, and the Waves led 4-3 through four.
The Lopes threatened in the eighth, getting runners to first and second, but
Michael Mahony entered the game and came out with a clean inning.
