#8 Waves Sweep Concordia, Fall 4-1 to Top-Ranked USC

MALIBU, Calif. – The #8 Pepperdine beach volleyball team split the day on Sunday afternoon, first sweeping past Concordia, Irvine before falling in a 4-1 bout to top-ranked USC in Malibu. Brook Bauer and Carly Skjodt went undefeated throughout the day, taking down their opponents with two-set victories.

Pepperdine (2-7) is the only team in the nation to have taken a point off USC (10-0) and the Waves have done so in three of the four matches against the Trojans.

MATCH RECAPS
The Waves came out firing on all cylinders, collecting first set wins over the Eagles on all five courts to set the tone for the match. Simone Priebe and Melanie Paul were the first to score for the home squad, besting their opposition on court two 21-16, 21-8 to put the Waves on the board. Calista Wright and Mary Sinclair split their first two sets 21-18, 22-24 on court four, but took a 15-8 win in set three to secure the 2-0 advantage.

Pepperdine put first set wins on the board in the second flight as well and Alexis Filippone and Sutton Mactavish would be the first to strike after putting up a 21-11, 21-5 win in the No. 3 position to clinch the overall dual win. Carly Skjodt and Brook Bauer then made it 4-0 with a 21-12, 21-17 win on court one.

Looking for the sweep, Michaela Kasper and Katie Gavin anteed up and won their match in the No. 5 slot with a 21-10, 21-18 victory to end the dual 5-0 in the Waves' favor.

In the second match, all the Waves played tough throughout. Skjodt and Bauer impressed with a 21-13, 21-19 victory over Hailey Harward and Julia Scoles in the No. 2 position to put the home squad on the board.

That would be the lone Waves' win for the dual, however, as all other Waves pairs were felled in two sets. Cameron Baklenko and Kristine Briede took a 21-16 first set off their opponents in the exhibition six slot as well, though.

NEXT UP
Next Thursday, the Waves welcome #4 UCLA to Malibu for a pair of duals on March 25.
