#8 Pepperdine Felled by #4 UCLA in Westwood

WESTWOOD, Calif. – Despite strong efforts on multiple courts, the #8 Pepperdine beach volleyball team was felled twice at Mapes Beach in Westwood this afternoon, dropping a pair of 4-1 decisions to #4 UCLA.

Simone Priebe and Melanie Paul won both their matches, first with a two-set victory on court three before moving up to the No. 2 slot to win in three. The pair advanced their record to 4-2 this season, while the Waves dropped to 1-5 as a team after the day against the Bruins (6-1).

MATCH RECAPS
The duals in Westwood were both played in two flight formats, with courts two and four playing before one, three and five. In the opening dual, Pepperdine dropped both courts in two sets to head into the second flight looking at a deficit. The Bruins would clinch with a 2-1 win on court one and extend the lead to 4-0 with one match still going.

Melanie Paul and Simone Priebe finished off the dual by putting the Waves on the board. The duo downed Lindsey Sparks and Hannah Phair 21-17, 23-21 to end the match.

In the second dual, the Waves made a few lineup changes. Though the No. 4 pair was downed in two sets to put the Bruins on the board first, Paul and Priebe highlighted the flight with a three-set bout against Abby Van Winkly and Lea Monkhouse, splitting the first two sets 21-19, 18-21 before winning the third 15-11.

UCLA won in two sets on courts one and five to secure the overall victory, but Alexis Filippone and Sutton Mactavish were battling it out on court three against Sparks and Phair. The Waves won the first set 21-18 before dropping the second 22-20. Filippone and Mactavish went to a 13-13 tie in the third set, but the opposition was able to secure a 15-13 win to make it 4-1 again on the overall.

Next, #8 Pepperdine will host #6 Cal Poly on Sunday, March 14 in Malibu.
