Waves Fall at Home to BYU

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball fell in a hard-fought West Coast Conference matchup on Tuesday night to BYU, 57-43. Cheyenne Givens had a career night, scoring 16 points to lead the Waves

The Waves (3-13, 0-12 WCC) outscored the Cougars (12-3, 8-2 WCC) in the middle two quarters, but a combined 10 points in the first and fourth quarters proved to be the difference in the contest.

BIG WAVES
  • Junior guard Cheyenne Givens (Gardena, Calif./LA Trade Tech) had a career-high 16 points and made two three-pointers. She also had four rebounds and an assist.
  • Senior center Tara Dusharm (Foley, Minn./Saint Louis) had her best game as a Wave, scoring 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
  • Senior forward Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) led the Waves with six rebounds. She also had a season-high four blocks.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The first quarter was all BYU, as the Cougars started the game on a 7-0 run. A three-pointer from Andriuolo gave the Waves their first points. The Cougars led 22-8 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Waves got their offense going, starting the quarter on a 6-0 run of their own. Pepperdine got to within seven points in the quarter and outscored the Cougars 16-13 but trailed 35-24 at the break.

The third quarter was nearly all Waves, as a 9-0 run late in the quarter brought the Waves to within four points, the closest they had been since the first two minutes of the game. Pepperdine outscored BYU 17-10 in the third quarter and trailed 45-41 going into the final ten minutes. BYU opened the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run to put the game away, with the Waves not scoring their only points until nearly eight minutes into the quarter.
