Double-Doubles Abound as Waves Win at Portland

PORTLAND, Oregon – Three Pepperdine men's basketball players had double-doubles, led by Colbey Ross' 24 points and 12 assists, as the Waves went to Portland and earned a 91-70 victory in West Coast Conference play on Saturday.

The Waves (8-8, 4-3) picked up their first true road win of the season and sent the Pilots (6-12, 0-9) to their 10th straight loss.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) continued his assault on the WCC record books, moving up to third place on the all-time assist list and 10th on the scoring chart. It was his fifth career game with at least 20 points and 10 assists. He made four three-pointers, putting him over 200 for his career, and making him just one of four Waves to achieve that feat. Ross had one turnover against his 12 assists.
  • Junior forward Kessler Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 11 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and the 15th of his career. He also had three steals.
  • Grad transfer forward Kene Chukwuka (Stockholm, Sweden/Pitt) recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
  • Junior guard Jade' Smith (Oakland, Calif./St. Joseph Notre Dame HS) had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists.
  • Sophomore guard Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif./Colony HS) scored 13 points, his third straight game in double-figures, along with three assists and a pair of blocks.
  • Sophomore forward Jan Zidek (Prague, Czech Republic) had nine points and four rebounds.

PLAY BY PLAY

Ross had a huge first half with 14 points and eight assists, playing a part in 35 of the Waves' 47 points. The Waves never trailed and the game was only tied once at 5-5. The Waves took their first double-digit lead at 20-10 after a lay-up by Chukwuka. A pair of Ross three-pointers made it a 10-point game again at 30-20. Three different Waves sank three-pointers in a 13-2 run that gave Pepperdine its largest lead of the half at 45-31. The lead was 47-35 at the break.

At 54-38, the Pilots made one run to get back into the game, going on a 13-5 spurt to close within eight points at 59-51 with 12 1/2 minutes left. But the Waves responded with a 10-3 run, capped off by a Zidek three-pointer, to make it 70-54 with 8 1/2 minutes to go. The lead stayed in double-digits the rest of the way and the final score was also the biggest margin of the night as the Waves ended the contest on a three-pointer by redshirt freshman guard Majok Deng (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS).

NOTABLES
  • Ross moved past three WCC greats (Yoeli Childs, Jim McPhee, Bo Kimble) on the conference's all-time scoring list and into 10th place. He now has 2,034 points. He also passed a pair of legends (Matthew Dellavedova and Christopher Anderson) on the assist list and is now third all-time in WCC history with 769.
  • The Waves' 47 points were their most in the first half against a Division I team this season. The 91 points were the most in regulation against a Division I team, as was the 21-point margin of victory.
  • The Waves beat Portland for the seventh straight time, and for the third consecutive year in Portland.
  • Portland was playing its first game under interim coach Ben Johnson after former head coach Terry Porter was dismissed on Friday.
  • This game was originally scheduled for February 18 but was moved up by the WCC to fill the void in both teams' schedules.
