Waves Explode for 19 Goals Against Lions at Home

MALIBU, Calif. – The #5 Pepperdine men's water polo team had an offensive explosion on Sunday, defeating #6 Loyola Marymount 19-7 in the final of a three-game home stand at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

The Waves (6-2) did not let up on the attack, but also had great defense, only allowing the Lions (4-4) 25 shots on the afternoon.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

Pepperdine scored early and often, as Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Mater Dei HS), Balazs Kosa (Csik Ferenc Általános Iskola és Gimnázium) and Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) all scored in the first quarter. Kent Emden started in goal for the Waves and didn't allow a goal in the first eight minutes, giving the Waves a 3-0 lead after a quarter.

Kosa scored to lead off the second quarter with another goal before the Lions got their first goal of the day. Austin Smit (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) scored his first goal of the afternoon. After another Lions goal, Jarvis and Kosa each got another goal. Travis Reynolds (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Loyola HS) scored just before the end of the half, putting the Waves up 8-3 through the first half of play.

Pepperdine kept up the scoring in the second half, as Tierney scored his second of the game before Sean Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS) got two straight goals and Michael Dakis (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) scored before the end of the third. At the end of three, the Waves led 13-3.

In the final eight minutes of play, Jarvis completed his hat trick, as did Tierney, who scored three goals in the quarter. Christian Hosea (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) and Jake Howerton (Cardiff, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) got his only goal of the game.
