SAN DIEGO, California – Four different Waves found the back of the net as the Pepperdine women's soccer team earned a 4-1 non-conference victory at San Diego on Friday afternoon.
The Waves (1-1) dominated play, outshooting the Toreros (0-1) 23-3. The shot count was 20-0 before USD recorded its first attempt in the 64th minute.
GOALS
Pepperdine 20': Junior defender
Trinity Watson (Ocean Beach, Calif./Point Loma HS) and freshman forward
Tori Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) played a short corner, with Waldeck eventually giving the ball to Watson. Watson, an All-WCC defender, snapped a shot toward the near post that the goalkeeper got a hand on, but not enough to stop it from going in. It was career goal number four for Watson.
Pepperdine 30': Senior midfielder
Madi Cook (Trabuco Canyon, Calif./Tesoro HS) assisted on the second goal by sending in a free kick to senior defender
Emily Sample (Plano, Texas/Plano West Senior HS). The ball curled toward the back post and Sample redirected it into the net for her first career goal.
Pepperdine 31': Less than a minute later, Waldeck scored her first career goal. She was pressing the Toreros' defense and intercepted a ball, and got in on goal. Her first shot was saved by the USD keeper, but she couldn't hold on and Waldeck scored off the rebound for her first career tally.
San Diego 72': The Toreros earned a penalty kick and Lexi Kaz scored.
Pepperdine 89': Sophomore midfielder
Carlee Giammona (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS/Alabama) played a ball over the top to junior forward
Leyla McFarland (Bonita, Calif./Eastlake HS). McFarland beat one defender, then the goalkeeper, with about a minute to go in the match. It was McFarland's sixth career goal.

QUOTABLE
Pepperdine Coach
Tim Ward said: "We played excellent today. We have a lot of depth and every player brought quality and energy, and kept our level of play really, really high. After conceding a couple of set-piece goals last week, it was nice to see us convert on two of them this week. We had so many good looks. We had a number of close chances in the second half. We probably should have had more than four but we'll take it."
