Waves Complete Comeback Against CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, California – The Pepperdine women's basketball team turned things around after halftime and defeated CSU Bakersfield 52-42 on Tuesday night inside the Icardo Center. Pepperdine had players in double-figures including Ally Stedman and Eve Braslis.
 
The Waves (3-3) outshot the Roadrunners (1-4) 42.0 to 25.9. After trailing 20-14 in a low-scoring first half, Pepperdine blew out CSUB 20-5 in the third quarter and went on for the win.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Freshman guard Ally Stedman (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle HS) had 19 points shooting 9-for-14, while adding  three assists and two steals.
  • Redshirt junior forward Eve Braslis (Newton, Victoria, Australia/Geelong College/Utah Valley) had 12 points shooting 5-for-9 and bringing down seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Sophomore forward Kendyl Carson (Juneau, Alaska/Juneau Douglas HS) had six points, was 2-for-3 from long range and had three assists and brought down four rebounds. 
GAME RECAP
 
The Roadrunners came out and scored the first bucket of the game and went on to score three more points before the Waves were on the board thanks to a jumper from Jane Nwaba (Carson, Calif./Palisades Charter HS). CSUB extended the lead to 7-4, before Stedman made the first three-point basket for Pepperdine to tie it up 7-7. The Roadrunners extended their lead with a six-point scoring run to end the first ten minutes, 12-7.
 
In the second quarter, CSUB made a layup that was answered right back by a Stedman layup to get Pepperdine back within five, 14-9. A scoreless two and a half minutes was ended by a Braslis spin for a layup to cut the deficit back within three, 14-11. The Roadrunners went on a five-point scoring run to go into the half ahead 20-14.
 
The Waves came out of the half firing and went on a five-point scoring run to start the comeback and get within one, 20-19. CSUB made a three-point basket, but Pepperdine would get within two before taking the game over. Pepperdine went on a seven-point scoring run to take the lead for the first time in the game, 28-25, with buckets from Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS), Carson and Stedman. The Roadrunners cut the margin from five to three on a layup, but another six-point scoring run gave the Waves a nine-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 34-25.
 
In the final 10 minutes of play, the Waves turned it up even more and had a nine-point scoring run to extend the lead to 45-29. CSUB made a layup, but Carson banked a three-point bucket to give the Waves a 17-point lead, which was the largest lead in the game. The Roadrunners then went on a seven-point scoring run to try and get the game back closer, 48-37. CSUB scored five more points and Pepperdine scored four more points, to leave Bakersfield with the win.

  • The Waves shot 23.1% in the first half and 62.5% in the second half.
  • Pepperdine notched 14 points off of 22 forced turnovers.
  • The Waves held the Roadrunners to under 30% shooting in three of the four quarters.
