TALLAHASSEE, Florida – The Pepperdine women's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over North Carolina State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon. Three different Waves found the back of the net to move Pepperdine to the Sweet 16 for just the fourth time ever in program history.
It was all Waves (17-3-1) the whole game as they outshot the Wolfpack (9-9-2) 20-3. Pepperdine had 10 shots in the first half to NC State's two shots and the Waves kept the momentum rolling through the next 45 minutes.
Pepperdine collected its 13th shutout of the season, which is still the second-most in program history (the record is 14 in 2017) and Zoe Clevely collected her 12th solo shutout of the season.
Multiple records happened on Friday, with Clevely collecting the 17th win of the season, which is a new single-season record for a Pepperdine goalkeeper. Joelle Anderson recorded her 24th career assist, tying a Pepperdine record. Tori Waldeck's 10th assist of the season tied the single-season record.
GOALS
Pepperdine 2': Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) sent a pass from the right side of the field to redshirt senior forward Calista Reyes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS). Reyes went to the middle of the box and sent a left-footed strike past the Wolfpack goalkeeper. This was Reyes' fifth goal of the season. Reyes has scored early goals in two consecutive NCAA Tournament games, as she tallied one in the fourth minute last weekend against South Dakota State. Today's goal was the quickest scored by the Waves in their NCAA Tournament history.
Pepperdine 67': Anderson (San Jose, Calif./The Harker School) sent a hook pass from the defensive side of the field to junior midfielder Carlee Giammona (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS/Alabama). Giammona crashed the offensive zone and beat two NC State defenders to get the ball and go one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Giammona sent a right-footed rocket into the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season.
Pepperdine 71': Sophomore forward Alex Sampson (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vistas HS) sent a right-footed pass to Anderson. Anderson then sent a left-footed one-timer from 18 yards out past the goalkeeper for the third goal of the game. This was Anderson's 11th goal of the season. Sampson recorded her first assist in a Waves' uniform.
